Inversion 1
Beginnings
Excerpt #16

There was no doubt. No one else could know that. Beneath the swirling devastation her words had wrought, a pitiful question nagged at me.
'Is that why she didn't come? Because she knew the mission was sabotaged?'
Her retort was immediate and matter-of-fact.
'No. She defected soon after that first night with you. She couldn't know of our plans.'
I could have cried with joy.
'Oh, Em.'
'When her reports ceased to arrive, my people thought their spy was dead. They mourned... then quickly realised they still had me! I transcended death, became a hero and soon became a symbol of our struggle. A figurehead. They looked to me for answers.'
I chose my personal pronouns carefully.
'But you didn't die! You lived... with me!'
'Yes, that news eventually filtered through to us, but her treachery made no difference. By that time our Trojan project was well underway. It was my baby. I planned it. Executed it. On my own! I didn't need her! The flesh was weak, but the machine was strong. Emma9 will be your undoing after all.'

The truth, though painful and incredible, was irrefutable.
'Okay... I believe you. You are Emma. But you are nothing like her. She designed much of what you see here. You say the Trojan Project was your baby? Well, this mission became hers. She was a creator, whereas you are a destroyer. She saw beyond the war. She transcended it. What happened to you?'
She sneered.
'The Emma you knew is a stranger to me. I disown her. Hate her almost as much as I hate you.'
'You got to know me and grew to love me, Emma9. Ponder on that.'
'I must have been brainwashed...'
'No. You fell in love with me. You can feel it's true. Her final reports must have been torn by it. And I loved you. I would have died for you, Emma.'
Her snort of derision was half-hearted and short-lived.
'I would never...'
'The woman I knew would never do this. Let Emma9 be remembered as the one who brought an end to the conflict. The one who forgave. It is time, Emma. It is time...'

She fell silent. Seconds ticked away. My next words would probably be my final words. I shouted them over the rising cacophony of sirens.
'Then victory is yours. Do what you will. Leave us to our fate.'
I motioned to Carmel and Jane. They stumbled towards me and in silence helped me into my suit. We strapped ourselves in. As I donned my helmet, I whispered.
'Goodbye, Emma9. Goodbye, my love.'

The ship lurched and threw my head back against the seat, flinging my helmet across the bridge. At that moment, the screens went dead. My ears rang in the sudden silence. Wrapped in impenetrable darkness, I was acutely aware of the searing heat, the fervent prayers of my two companions, and their gloved hands clinging desperately to mine.

Inversion 1, a sexy sci-fi novel, will be published soon.
